Whether you’re a seasoned pro, a beginner, an enthusiast, or someone who just wants to safely enjoy the outdoors, keep these hunting safety tips in mind with deer hunting season in full swing.

Education

  • Every person who wants to hunt needs to pass a hunter’s education course. According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, anyone 12 or older needs a hunter education course completion card in their possession while hunting, as well as the appropriate Kentucky hunting license.

Tell someone where you’re going hunting

  • We hope nothing goes wrong while you’re hunting, but if it does, letting someone know where you’ll be is good insurance. This could be a text or leaving a note on the kitchen counter.

Dress Properly

  • Hypothermia is no joke. Don’t put on too many layers that you’ll sweat but do dress for possible colder weather.
  • Wear camouflage that will conceal you and blend into your environment.
  • BUT during open season, wear hunter orange to make sure other hunters can see you.

Gun safety

  • Always act as if your gun is loaded (even when it isn’t) because accidents happen!
  • Always point your weapon in a safe direction. NEVER point it toward people.
  • Unload firearms when not actively hunting.
  • Don’t hold firearms in-hand when crossing fences or other obstacles.
    • If you’re on your own, safely lay the gun on the ground.
    • If with someone, hand the gun to them before crossing.
  • Wear safety glasses and earplugs to protect hearing and eyesight.
  • Check your weapon for faulty parts. Damaged equipment has serious potential for bodily harm.

Be mindful and respectful of other hunters around you.

We hope you enjoy this hunting season and that these tips can keep you safe.
