ABOUT
OAK GROVE
On Interstate 24,
located on the border of Western Kentucky
and Middle Tennessee, you’ll find Oak Grove, a city of about 8,000.
The city was founded
in 1828 as a small farming community. It was named for a grove of oak trees
that stood near the city’s first post office, which was located
inside Postmaster Samuel Gordon’s store.
In 1884, the Buckberry Special, a combination freight-passenger
train running from Clarksville, Tenn., to Princeton,
Ky., turned Oak Grove into a
railroad town.
In July 1941, the War
Department named Oak Grove as a defense establishment. And the following
year, the city gained its nearest neighbor, Fort Campbell,
home of the 101st Airborne Division.
The City of Oak
Grove’s Articles of Incorporation were signed in 1974. The
sixth-class city quickly rose to a fifth-class city two years later. It
became a fourth-class city in 2001.
The city has grown
with the needs of its civilian and military residents, and we’re
proud to say Oak Grove is one of Kentucky’s
fastest-growing cities.
